Celebrating Excellence: Dr. Timothy Dasinger Named Trailblazer of the Year

Medical education thrives on the dedication and ingenuity of its educators, and each year the Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education recognizes those who redefine the learning experience. This year, we proudly honor Timothy Dasinger, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education, as the Trailblazer of the Year.

Dr. Dasinger’s impact on medical education is both profound and far-reaching. As Foundational Sciences Director for the Introduction to the Medical Profession I course, he plays a key role in shaping the early experiences of first-year medical students. Known for his engaging lectures and hands-on teaching style, he transforms complex anatomical and biomedical concepts into dynamic, interactive learning experiences.

“Dr. Dasinger is the kind of educator who goes above and beyond to make learning memorable,” says Dr. Yuefeng Lu, Professor in the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education. “He once brought 168 meticulously prepared paper cutouts for students to fold into models of the pterygopalatine fossa, ensuring they could visualize and understand this challenging anatomical region in a way no textbook ever could.”

His passion for education extends beyond the classroom. In just two years, Dr. Dasinger has played a pivotal role in curriculum innovation, faculty mentorship, and student advising. Whether integrating new technologies like AI-driven lab group assignments, 3D imaging, and interactive polling tools or leading initiatives in peer mentorship and virtual reality applications in anatomy education, he continuously pushes the boundaries of how medical students engage with the foundational sciences.

Dr. Dasinger also contributes significantly to research and faculty development. His top-rated teaching evaluations among first-year medical students in 2023 are a testament to his ability to connect with learners. Additionally, his leadership in the PhD Program in Clinical Anatomy and Patient-Oriented Problem Solving (POPS) activities showcases his commitment to advancing education at all levels.

Dr. Norma Ojeda, Chair of the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education, describes him as “an innovative educator who not only inspires students but also leads by example in shaping the future of medical education.”
